Community Folk Festival

Come enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of entertainment and food at the Cortland Community Folk Festival on April 25, 2009. The festival will run from Noon to 4 PM at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland. This event will showcase and celebrate the ethnicities and cultural heritages of Cortland County through dance performances, music, crafts, art, games, and delicious food. Admission will be free. The public is welcome to come for all or any part of the afternoon. If you have an ethnic outfit, you are encouraged to wear it.

The following approximate schedule of events and performers is planned:

~ 12:10 PM: Welcome by local officials

~ 12:15 PM: Parade of Flags

~ 12:30 PM: Egyptian-style belly dances by Donia and her Middle Eastern dancers

~ 1:00 PM: International folk dances by the Roberson Folk Dance Group

~ 1: 30 PM: Scottish dances by members of the Clough School of Highland Dance. Live Highland bagpipe music performed by Reverend Allan Ferguson

~ 2:00 PM: Folk dances taught by Bess Koval with everyone invited to participate

~ 2:30 PM: Chinese dances by Ling's Dance Company

~ 3:00 PM: Africana dances by the SUNY Cortland Africana Dance Ensemble

~ 3:30 PM: A square dance to “God Bless America” as choreographed by the late Dick Leger and performed by the Cortland Square Dance Club

~ 3:45 PM: Parade of Flags

Local community groups will be selling international foods throughout the festival, and a “Parade of Flags” will open and close the festival. The International Club from Homer High School will present exhibits and games to expand awareness of countries and their cultures. Ethnic crafts, such as origami, will be taught. This festival will be colorful, family-friendly, educational, and fun.

The Folk Festival is supported by a New York State Council for the Arts Decentralization grant and the Cortland Youth Bureau.
